So now that you've learned how to create HTML files, you need to know how to make them available for the world to see. This will require you to have space, somewhere on the web, where your files will be "hosted." Many Internet Service Providers will give you a small amount of space when you sign up with them, so that would be the first place to start. Phone your ISP, or check their web site. If you can't get space in such a manner, there are a number a companies on the Internet who will let you use their space, some charge a fee, some don't. Once you have your space, you have to get your files onto the computers of the company hosting your site. The most common way to do this is by using a service called "FTP." FTP is a method of easily moving files around. All you need is two computers which both understand how FTP works, plus the settings required to get everything working. For the settings, you will need to deal with the company hosting your files. You will need to have a username, a password, and the address of your site, so everything will end up in the right place. Usually, your web address will end up looking something like: http://www.sitename.com/username FTP is a common protocol for computers. In fact, all computers running Windows have FTP software already in them. The problem is that this software is usually very hard to use, and requires you to remember a large number of complicated commands which you have to type in every time you want to do anything. A much simpler method is to go on the Web, and search for FTP Client software. These programs are made to make FTP more understandable. You can just point and click with the mouse instead of memorizing commands. Again, some are free and some aren't, try a few and find one you like. |
